Health & Health Care

Over the past quarter century I have interviewed hundreds of doctors and researchers and scores of patients—and feel equally comfortable speaking with both. Consumer health advisories; the latest advances in medical research; how to best navigate the sometimes complicated health insurance labyrinth; health insurance white papers; internal hospital communications; annual reports and newsletters for non-profit health foundations—I have handled hundreds of health-related stories and assignments for audiences ranging from consumers to healthcare professionals. I am constantly intrigued by how much medical science has learned about the complexities of the human body—but equally captivated by how much still remains an uncharted mystery. My health and healthcare writing and editing includes:

    • Annual reports, newsletters and Web copy for non-profit health foundations: For example, for the Brandywine Health Foundation, each year I write the copy for its annual community report and expand that text into lengthier stories that primarily focus on individuals who benefit from the foundation’s support of local agencies and programs, as well as on service providers and foundation supporters. Several years ago those stories, in turn, formed the basis for video interviews now also posted on BHF’s website.
    • Annual reports for major health insurers: Clients have included Independence Blue Cross and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida.
    • Medical school newsletters: For six years Pulse, a quarterly newsletter for the Temple University School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine, targeted referring physicians.
    • Consumer-oriented health-care stories about children, adults and seniors: For many years I produced these for Krames Staywell, a health-care communications firm whose print and digital products are distributed by hospitals, health insurers and employers throughout the country. For Krames Staywell and its clients, I have written numerous stories on health and wellness topics and insurance issues, including commercial health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. I have also produced health insurance-related white papers for Krames Staywell.
    • External and internal communications for hospitals:
    • External communications: These have included web and newsletter copy; capability brochures, such as in-depth descriptions of Abington Memorial Hospital’s senior health and gastro-bypass surgical programs; information for parents of young patients at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP); an annual report for CHOP’s Nursing Department; and both annual report copy and departmental fundraising brochure copy for the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine.
    • Internal communications: Extensive web and print copy for CHOP staff regarding the implementation of HIPPA requirements. For Abington Memorial Hospital, I have also written web and newsletter copy for its patient safety and quality care initiatives; and have written feature stories for Temple University Health System’s Capsule employee magazine.
    • Communications consulting: I have helped several nonprofit health foundations and agencies improve their communication programs by sharpening their writing and story-telling skills.
